On Peter’s Mind: The Power of Prospecting

Prospecting is a powerful force. What’s interesting is that the resistance to beginning is often greater than the work itself. The idea of committing to five or ten calls a day can feel overwhelming. Yet the reality is it rarely takes more than an hour.

The results are always mixed. Lots of voicemails. Lots of “No thank you.” Lots of people not interested. And then suddenly someone says, “I’d love to meet.” That one call can make the entire effort worthwhile.

But there are two other things about prospecting that I find fascinating. First, many of those voicemails eventually call back. Second, and even more interesting, is how often completely unrelated business shows up once you start prospecting consistently. A referral comes in. Someone mentions your name. An opportunity appears from a totally different source.

There’s nothing magical happening. The universe rewards effort. Momentum creates momentum. Consistency is the key.

If you want to move the needle, if you want a repeatable business, if you want to feel like you are truly accomplishing something, prospecting is still one of the most powerful habits you can develop. The greatest reward is not just the business created—it’s the confidence, discipline, and sense of purpose that comes from consistently doing the work.
