Don’t get me wrong: I am a big believer in striving to be our best selves. We are meant to grow, improve, and evolve into the best versions of ourselves. Taking care of our health—both physical and mental—is essential. We should be curious, continuously learning, and seeking self-improvement.
But here’s the rub: when our desire to improve becomes neurotic, obsessive, or self-deprecating, it stops serving us. Constantly comparing ourselves to others (or even to unrealistic ideals created by AI) can lead to feelings of inadequacy. This mindset becomes unhealthy, debilitating, and ultimately counterproductive to our growth.
To cultivate a healthier perspective, consider the following tips:
- Aim for Progress, Not Perfection: Strive for 80% instead of expecting to hit 100%. Perfection is often an unattainable goal.
- Practice Self-Compassion: Give yourself grace. Acknowledge your efforts and celebrate small wins.
- Focus on Strengths: Shift your mindset to highlight what you are doing right, rather than fixating on where you fall short.
- Limit Comparisons: Remember that everyone’s journey is unique. Focus on your path and growth rather than comparing yourself to others.
At the end of the day, YOU are enough just as you are! Embrace your journey, imperfections, and all.
